X-Men Tarot - Jean Grey - The Empress

Here is the fourth card of the Tarot's Major Arcana X-Men style. Based on the Rider-Waite model of tarot, card #3 is The Empress. The choice of character this time is Jean Grey, Phoenix. Jean was chosen because the Empress is the Matriarch of the tarot deck and Jean is the Matriarch of the X-Men. The scepter she holds is topped by the M'Kraan Crystal. Normally the Empress carries a shield which is a symbol of love and protection, it was changed instead for a Phoenix manifestation. In an effort to save her friends and family from certain death she sacrificed herself to the cosmic being 'The Phoenix', saving those she loved.
